If there’s one thing that would make golfers better, I mean immediately better, it would be to stop listening and acting on the standard golf myths we all hear every day, on every driving range, during every round we play and sadly from most traditional golf instructors.
Today’s golfers are victims of over analysis, understatement, misconceptions and flat out untruths that can hinder progress and lead to frustration. These well-intentioned but misguided pieces of advice can create swing flaws and limit a golfer's potential. In this article, I'll debunk ten of the most prevalent golf instruction myths, shedding light on the truth and paving the way for a more effective and enjoyable golfing experience.
Myth 1: Keep Your Left Arm Straight: The notion of maintaining a rigid left arm throughout the swing is a classic misconception. While some degree of extension is beneficial, a completely straight left arm can restrict natural movement and lead to a loss of power. A slight bend in the left arm allows for greater flexibility and a more fluid swing.
Myth 2: Picking Your Head Up: The admonition to "you picked your head up" is often misinterpreted as a mandate to keep the head completely immobile. In reality, a subtle upward movement of the head during the backswing is natural and necessary for a proper weight shift and rotation. The key is to maintain a consistent spine angle and avoid excessive head movement.
Myth 3: You're Swinging Too Hard: While over-swinging can lead to a loss of control and accuracy. You have to swing hard if you want to hit the ball farther. Focus on generating power through proper technique, including a balanced weight shift, efficient rotation, and a smooth tempo.
Myth 4: Keep Your Right Elbow Tucked In: While maintaining some connection between the right elbow and the body is important, excessively tucking the elbow can restrict the backswing and hinder power generation. A relaxed and natural arm position is crucial for a free-flowing and powerful swing.
Myth 5: Don't Lift Your Front Heel: (This one really gets me going, look at many of the top golfers in the world over last 100 years and you’ll notice many of them lift their front heel.) The instruction to keep the front heel planted throughout the swing can limit weight transfer and hip rotation. A slight lifting of the front heel during the backswing is natural and facilitates a proper weight shift onto the back foot.
Myth 6: Follow Through with Your Chest at the Target: The idea of finishing with the chest facing the target can lead to a reverse pivot and a loss of power. A proper follow-through involves a balanced finish with the chest facing slightly left of the target, indicating a full rotation and weight transfer.
Myth 7: Keep Your Head Down Through Impact: Similar to Myth 2, this advice is often misinterpreted. While maintaining a stable head position is important, a slight upward movement of the head through impact is natural and allows for proper extension and a full release of power. If you can’t follow your ball flight after impact you’re doing it wrong.
Myth 8: Your Lead Side Controls the Swing: The notion that the lead side (left side for right-handed golfers) is solely responsible for controlling the swing is misleading. Both sides of the body play a crucial role in generating power and maintaining balance. A coordinated effort from both sides is essential for a consistent and efficient swing.
Myth 9: Focus on Cocking Your Wrists: While wrist cock is an important element of the swing, overemphasizing it can lead to timing issues and a loss of power. A natural and relaxed wrist set allows for a smooth and effortless swing. This should be a byproduct of an efficient swing, not something you focus on.
Myth 10: Swing Like (Insert any Professional Golfer’s Name): The belief that there's a single, universally correct swing is a misconception and simply rubbish. There are an infinite number of ways to swing a golf club. Golf swings vary depending on individual body types, strengths, and weaknesses. The key is to find a swing that feels natural and comfortable while adhering to sound fundamentals.
By debunking these common golf instruction myths, golfers can break free from outdated, ineffective and un proven advice. Remember, the key to improvement lies in understanding the fundamentals, practicing with intention, and seeking guidance from qualified instructors who can tailor their instruction to your individual needs.
In the end ask yourself, “What is the premise of the golf swing?” I believe it’s as simple as creating a swinging action of the clubhead around one’s body. Because when it’s all said and done golf is what the ball does. Finding your most effective and efficient swing can be as simple as you let it be. I guarantee it!
