Royal Troon's Postage Stamp: A Tiny Terror at The Open

Royal Troon Golf Club in Scotland is renowned for its challenging links course, and perhaps no hole is more iconic or feared than the 8th.

Affectionately known as the "Postage Stamp" hole.

A Hole of Contrasts

The Postage Stamp is a par-3 hole that measures a mere 123 yards from the tee box to the green. Its diminutive size is deceptive, as the hole presents a daunting challenge to even the most seasoned golfers. From the elevated tee, players are met with a breathtaking view of the Firth of Clyde and Ailsa Craig, a volcanic island that rises dramatically from the sea. However, the beauty of the surroundings is quickly overshadowed by the treacherous nature of the hole itself.

The Challenge

The Postage Stamp's green is notoriously small and narrow, resembling, as its name suggests, a postage stamp. It is protected by five bunkers, including the infamous "Coffin" bunker that lurks to the left of the green. The wind can swirl unpredictably, making club selection a guessing game. A well-struck shot can find the green and leave a birdie putt, while a slightly errant shot can find one of the bunkers or the rough, leading to bogey or worse.

A History of Drama

The Postage Stamp has witnessed its fair share of drama over the years. In the 2004 Open Championship, Ernie Els aced the hole, sending the crowd into a frenzy. However, the hole has also been the site of many disasters. In the 2016 Open, Rory McIlroy carded a triple-bogey after his tee shot found the Coffin bunker.

The Postage Stamp's Legacy

The Postage Stamp is a hole that lives up to its reputation. It is a test of nerve, skill, and luck. A hole that can make or break a round. A hole that is etched in the memories of all who have played it.

Whether you're a professional golfer or a weekend warrior, the Postage Stamp is a hole that will leave a lasting impression. It is a reminder that even the smallest of challenges can be the most daunting, and that even the most beautiful of surroundings can hide the most treacherous of hazards.
